Splash guards (mud flaps) discolored and/or distorted due to proximity to tailpipe.

Symptoms:

Vehicles with splash guards may experience discoloration and/or distortion along the outside edge of the passenger side rear splash guard due to the proximity to the tailpipe.

Diagnosis:

Inspect right rear splash guard for signs of discoloration and/or distortion.

Repair:

Repairs are made to the tips of the Cummins diesel, 5.9 or 8.0 gas engine tailpipe.  Parts are listed and procedures are illustrated on the TSB.

5.9L DIESEL ENGINE EXHAUST REPAIR  

1. Measure 2.75" from the 3" to 4" transition toward the tailpipe spout end (fig 1) and cut off the end of the tailpipe at that point.
2. Install new tailpipe tip onto the tailpipe and ensure that the tip is completely seated onto the tailpipe.
3. Orient the tip so that the end of the tip is directed toward the rear of the vehicle and parallel to the ground as shown in fig 2.
4. Secure the tailpipe tip with the exhaust clamp.

5.9L V8/8.0L V10 GAS ENGINE EXHAUST REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Measure 9.37" from the end of the top of the tailpipe (fig 3) and cut off the end of the tailpipe at that point.
2. Install new tailpipe tip onto the tailpipe and ensure that the tip is completely seated onto the tailpipe.
3. Orient the tip so that the end of the tip is directed toward the rear of the vehicle and parallel to the ground as shown in fig 4.
4. Secure the tailpipe tip with the exhaust clamp.
