Discussion:

Mottled or blotchy paint is a condition where the paint may have an appearance of being sporadically thin or the paint changes from light to dark on the vehicle. This condition may not be noticeable in all types of lighting. In order to be able to identify a mottled paint condition on a vehicle, the following inspection procedure was developed. This procedure should be used any time customers complain of blotchy paint.

Inspection Procedure:

  1. Wash and dry the vehicle thoroughly, including areas around the wheel well, tailgate opening, and door openings.
  2. Place the vehicle in an isolated area that has direct sunlight.
  3. Inspect the area of the vehicle that is in direct sunlight for thin, mottled, or blotchy paint. Repeatedly rotate the vehicle until all panels are viewed in direct sunlight.
  4. Any area that has been diagnosed as thin, mottled, or blotchy can be repaired using a standard sectional paint repair procedure.
