I brought my 2004 Grand Caravan in for a Fall Tune up. I was told I'd need my
spark plugs and wires replaced. My van is at 79000 Kms. I said I wanted to wait
until after the holidays. My tech adviser told me they were originals and should
be replaced lest I stall in the middle of winter or have to pay $90 for a diagnostic
to be told the same thing should the check engine light come on. I was also
told my Sway bar bushings needed replacing on warranty as well. I agreed to
have the brakes done and the tune up for a quoted price of approximately $250
after tax. When I checked my previous bills to see how often the sway bar bushings
had been replaced (4 times in as many years) I also noticed that my spark plugs
and wiring had been changed at 27000 kms on a service bulletin in January of
2006.
Their 'recommendation' to change my spark plugs was made purely on assumption that I had original 4 year old plugs and not on any diagnostic fact. I would have paid $400+ unnecessarily if I had agreed to have them replaced out of fear of stalling. They also attempted to charge me for an alignment that was necessary due to a suspension job that was also done on warranty. I refused to pay for the alignment but my $250 estimate still came out to $350 and had I paid the alignment and had my plugs done, I'd have spent close to $600 more!
I was told their mechanic suggested the replacement on assumption of age of plugs and that the tech adviser doesn't see history on his computer screen in detail. That's just plain unacceptable to me. I spoke with the Service Manager and got lots of excuses and 'reasons'.
I will never go back to Dodge Des Sources because I can't put my trust in them
to put their customer's satisfaction above the bottom line. I had every servicing
done with them for 4 years and I would have thought they'd reward my loyalty
with honesty and integrity.
