My wife and I came to Perkins Dodge to purchase a Ram 1500 4x4. I really wanted
to purchase a new truck as a coming home present for myself as I very recently
returned from Iraq. The sales department did not try to accommodate us whatsoever
so we could purchase a Ram. They wanted to give me $4000 less on our trade-in
than what it "blue-booked" for, with outlandish payments ($750/month)
and interest rate (10% with $2500 down) for a ridiculous period of time (84
months), even though our credit scores good. The Sales Manager even told us
that he was very impressed with our credit scores. Even before coming to the
dealership, I notified Perkins Dodge via email what conditions I wanted met
before I would consider buying a new vehicle. None of my conditions were met
and Perkins would not budge on their outlandish offer. I left Perkins and proceeded
to Mike Shaw GMC where I received outstanding service. Mike Shaw gave me $6000
more for my trade-in than Perkins was willing to give with an interest rate
almost half of Perkins offered rate for a shorter financing period. We got twice
the truck for the same asking price. The Ram 1500 that Perkins Dodge was trying
to sell to me was a relatively "bare bones" model with minimal options.
I purchased a 2008 GMC Sierra from Mike Shaw GMC that was roughly the same asking
price as the Ram, but was fully loaded with the SLE1 package. I couldn't have
been happier with the service from Mike Shaw's sales staff. Mike Shaw GMC worked
with us until all of our buying conditions were met and they made sure that
I walked away happy.

Sales=Don't Know, Service=Poor, Parts=Fair, bought there=No, scv_there=Yes,
Buy_DaimlerChrysler_again=Maybe,
I brought my 04.5 2500 CTD in for warranty work. Perkins Dodge tried to say
my issues was fuel related...which I knew was not true. Then they recommended
a fuel filter change. I did this a few hundred miles before I went in as well
as checked the filter before I went in. Perkins then pulled a few injectors,
why I have no idea. The dealerships can't even pop test the injectors. I was
even told that there was only one place in Colorado that has that capabilities.
I know of 3 in the Denver area alone. Perkins then had my truck for several
days and called to tell me my truck was done. The lot personnel drove my truck
up, sounded great. The noise that was there in the first place was gone. All
they did was a valve adjustment, which is required due to pulling the 2 injectors
(exhaust is only required, might as well do them all). I left with my truck
and no farther than 1 mile away, something popped in the motor and I shut down
and coasted to a stop. Perkins towed it back to the shop. This truck was knocking
like a rod was out of it. Perkins had it for several more days. They called
and said it was complete. I talked to the Service Manager. He told me that the
Rocker Bridge just came off and make a little racket. He then told me that they
replaced the push tubes on the cylinder in question for "good measure".
He told me that they test drove this truck for a long ways to make sure it ran
great. They directed me to my truck. I started the truck up and it sounded just
like when it got towed in. The knock was the same. I figured that if they couldn't
figure out this issue within several days with the "lead" diesel mech.
on it...they would never have it fixed. Now I found out later going to a qualified
diesel mechanic that fixed my problem in 30 minutes that Perkins lied. They
didn't test my truck for hours. I couldn't even drive it 1/2 a mile before the
truck would stop. I will get to the reason later.
So I had to borrow my friends 1986 FORD F-250 and tow it up to Denver. The reason
the truck would stop is due to a bent push tube on #5 exhaust valves. The compression
in the cylinder would build up so much it would stop an in-line 6 diesel motor.
At this point I was pretty upset. This true diesel mechanic also told me that
I would most likely have other issues down the road and soon with head gaskets
and such. He must have a crystal ball or something. So after scoping my cylinder
and doing a leak down test that was "OK" at best, he installed the
injector, re-did the valve rack due to all of the valves done at the wrong gaping.
It is very simple. You have to let the motor cool overnight, do not start it,
exhaust valves are set at .020 and intake valves are at .010. Not one was correct.
I took the bill back to Chris Roberts at Perkins Dodge with the bent push tube.
He was embarrassed to say the least, and paid the 265.00 that the "qualified"
diesel mechanic fixed.
Well, I was going out of state at the end of June and my truck took a dump on
Sunday in the Denver area (I-70 westbound). I called this diesel mechanic and
he towed me back to his shop for no charge and worked on my truck to get it
back on the road. I watched him ohm out my injectors. They were all over 1 ohm.
He showed me the specs on the 3rd generation Dodge injectors, which is 1 ohm
or less. I had 5 failing injectors. He had a brand new set from Cummins in his
shop. He also thought there was another problem. On his hunch, he put it all
back together and started up the truck. It still ran terrible. He then told
me I most likely had a blown head gasket. He pulled the radiator cap and the
white smoke coming out of the exhaust was almost gone. So I left the truck there.
He pulled the head, sent if off to get pressure tested. That came back OK, but
the head was slightly warped. So we had to mill the head .006 to make true again.
The head wasn't true by the #4 and #5 cylinder.. wonder why. The compression
in the cylinder was so great to stop the motor...it warped the head. All I wanted
was the injectors covered under warranty. I called later on that week and talked
to Cathy in claims to see if this would be covered. She told me only on Sunday.
Well, I figured no problem.
I didn't get a receipt until the following week when I went back up to get my
truck. We had a long day and his assistant wasn't there to do paperwork. I came
back up to Denver to get my truck in the first week in July. His assistant put
on the paperwork the Sunday after I talked to Cathy on the phone at Perkins
Dodge. Well Chris Roberts in all his wisdom tried and succeeded to void my warranty...at
least for the diesel motor. He told me that since I didn't bring my truck into
a 5 STAR..it would not be covered under any warranty. Then I told him about
the head gasket, and of coarse he said that wasn't from his mechanic. I think
Dodge "service" is non existent. Every one I ever stepped foot in
was a bad experience. I should have stayed with GMC trucks . They are a little
more...and now I know why. This problem was not a Dodge quality problem, but
a technician that didn't know what he was doing or lost track of what he was
doing and wrecked my truck. In anyone's right mind, do you think I would let
Perkins Dodge pull my head to fix what they caused. They couldn't even do a
simple injector removal an set the valves properly without bending a push tube
or two. Perkins Dodge would have had my truck in the shop until early 2008 and
still not have a clue what is going on. Sometimes you have to look outside the
STAR computer and use your head and experience to fix a problem. I am very dissatisfied
with Perkins Dodge Service and Chris Roberts, the Service Manager. Talk about
the blind leading the blind!

On two separate occurrences the sales manager was a complete moron and actually
acted like he didn't want my business by offering insulting prices on my trade.
